Implementing a 'no junk food' policy in schools has been shown to tackle effectively the over-weight problem among students. Assistant Professor Emma Sanchez-Vaznaugh, of San Francisco State University, and fellow researchers studied eight years of body mass index (BMI) data of school children aged 11 and 13 (fifth and seventh graders) in California. The study covered the period before and after a ban on sweetened beverages (including carbonated drinks) and a restriction on the sale of junk food in California's public schools. The data showed that before the policies took effect, the rate of over weight students was increasing between girls and boys. In the 3-year period after the policies were implemented, the increase in the number of over-weight children was significantly reduced between fifth-grade boys and both seventh-grade boys and girls throughout California.

I'm a strong believer in healthy foods, not processed foods. Natural calories, not empty ones. Great hub here there's a lot to be changed about our society's eating habits unfortunately. But some days it seems we're on the right track!
